SATURDAY FIRST WEEK OF LENT (ST JOSEPH HUSBAND OF MARY)

posted Mar 18, 2011, 3:36 PM by Fabian MANUKIALONA
Joseph is the link between David and the Messiah. Just as through faith Abraham became the father of many children, so through obedience Joseph becomes the legal father of Jesus. In today's Gospel text, he is the "husband of Mary" and the predominating personality. Jesus is born in his family; he is with Mary at Jesus' birth; he names the child Jesus and is his guardian. He protects the mother and the child from the persecution of Herod, flees with them to Egypt, and later brings them to Nazareth. Joseph was a deeply religious minded Israelite who faithfully obeyed all expressions of God's will: the law of circumcising the child, purification of the mother, offering at the temple and annual pilgrimage to the Temple. he is honest, pious, faithful and good; in short, a just man. Jesus was known as the son of Joseph whose dignity as father and teacher of Jesus is in comparable.
